OPEN CALL - Request for Artist Proposals

Portland Creative Bus Shelter Initiative Phase 2

Deadline: December 31, 2021 - 11:59pm

Creative Portland invites Greater Portland artists to submit proposals for the Portland Creative Bus Shelter Initiative. Funded partially by a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Our Town Creative Placemaking grants program, matched by corporate sponsors and project partners Greater Portland METRO and GPCOG, the program will fund 3-4 separate bus shelters with add-on designs to existing code-compliant shelters. The project management team supervised by Creative Portland will oversee the installation.

Artist(s) will be considered based on:

  • An interest in public arts messaging under the theme of celebrating our City’s diversity

  • A practice of inclusive community bonding & cultural acceptance

  • A Demonstration of quality work & artistic excellence

  • An ability to create renderings or drawings of a notable and impactful creative design

  • Precision renderings and designs for add-on installations of bus shelters

  • Experience using exterior weather-resistant materials for large scale public art

  • Proven experience in time management and delivery on budget

  • An ability to collaborate and take direction from the project management team, who will work to find complementary in-kind service providers to enhance the project and keep it on budget.

Bus shelter locations will be assigned by Creative Portland following the artist selection. Dimensions and size of proposed locations will be provided to the artist before completing final drawings for greenlight approval.

The curatorial review team of volunteers will include representatives from higher education institutions, museums, arts organizations, and corporate sponsors, and private philanthropists.

Required Proposal Materials Include:

  • A written description of the concept,

  • Drawings/renderings of the proposed design

  • An installation plan (please provide a timeline beginning April 1, and ending before  Sept 1, for  implementation. Include materials and other specific instructions for consideration).

  • Maintenance plan (GP Metro will be in charge of maintenance, but please provide any detailed information concerning longevity of materials and basic maintenance requirements)

  • An informal budget (list)

A sample rendering of what the app may look like

Creative Portland and the tech wizards Yarn Corporation are teaming up to create something cool-- the Creative Portland App a wayfinding app to promote Portland’s cultural life. Think of it as a 24/7 Art Walk Guide.
We want to include the best of Portland’s art and arts ecosystem. We are reaching out to arts organizations and artists to cull together exciting images, not unlike those in our sizzle reel on the Creative Portland website.

Consider this an ongoing open call to submit your work for inclusion.

Two options:
  1. On a promotional basis, we’ll feature your work and give you credit when applicable. Cultural organizations and individual artists may submit images for consideration.
  2. We will hire local artists who live or work in the Portland area to create and collaborate on designs and illustrations for specific landing pages on our website and app. If you're interested in work-for-hire commissions, please contact us at with a memo re: cultural app designs.
Be sure to include your full name, address, phone number, and any social media/website information. Email us at or call us at 207-370-4784 if you have any questions.
This program is funded in part by a cultural plan implementation grant from the Maine Arts Commission.
