Portrait painting is one of the most enduring subjects in art, powerfully capturing likeness, character, and emotion. Open to those with basic familiarity with oil painting, in this course students will explore the fundamentals of portraiture through two paintings: one from direct observation of a clothed life model, and one from a photograph of themselves or someone they know. Portrait painting combines fundamental drawing techniques with an understanding of color to create paintings that feel observed and full of life. Students will learn how to construct an accurate preparatory drawing, develop an underpainting, and build layered color to achieve convincing skin tones and depth. A key focus of this course is identifying and mixing the subtle hues found within skin under varying lighting conditions. Through demonstrations and guided practice, each student will complete two finished portraits and develop a deeper understanding of an oil painting portraiture process from start to finish.
