O Lar, which means “The Home” in Brazilian Portuguese, is an exhibit of illustration works which look at how artists incorporate the idea of “home” in their work. Curator Michaela Flint asked artists to create or share work that was inspired by the idea of what home means to them. The result is a rich and varied collection of illustrations which illuminate the enduring bond to one’s home. The artists represented in this exhibit are Andrés Vera Martínez, Eda French, Emily Woodbury, Erika Jamece, Erin Dodge, Isabella Rotman, Jamie Hogan, Kate Gardner, Katie Steere, Leticia Plate, Logan White, Lynne Cullen, Mary Cruz, and Sally Wagley.

The exhibit is curated by Michaela Flint, a Brazilian American artist and illustrator whose family was separated due to visa difficulties. Being of two different cultures has permeated everything that Flint does, including her illustration work. With the experience of her father’s deportation back to his homeland of Brazil, the idea of home and belonging has inspired her ever since she was a child. Flint believes that art is the best way to capture the public’s interest for connection. She believes that illustrations leave a positive impact on those who see them. Flint wants to recreate the same feeling of hope and happiness that she experienced when she first discovered her favorite illustrated books as a child. Flint’s philosophy in her illustrations is to bring fresh perspectives and narratives to a wide and diverse audience. Her illustrations are inspired by her mixed culture, advocacy, and the city of Portland, Maine where she calls home.
