This exhibit in the Camden National Bank Community Gallery displays student-created block prints and a celebration of over 30 years of the Maine and Aomori, Japan, sister state relationship. At 5:30 in the Community Gallery, enjoy remarks from guest speakers in the auditorium, along with cultural activities and information from other organizations with connections to Aomori.

Join us for activities held in conjunction with the Maine and Aomori: Sister States Relationship exhibit in the Camden National Bank Community Gallery.  Events celebrating japanese culture will be hosted in the Community Gallery, Rines Auditorium and meeting rooms throughout the evening.  A performance by Taiko Dojo in the Atrium will showcase traditional Japanese drumming.

Maine and Aomori share similar geography — rocky coastlines, forests, and farmlands — that lend themselves to kindred agricultural and marine harvest practices. Over more than 30 years, the two regions have had a sister state partnership which has fostered person-to-person exchanges focused on technology, arts, culture, climate change mitigation, trade promotion, and the sharing of knowledge in fisheries and aquaculture. Educational exchanges between middle and high school students have strengthened interpersonal relationships, while exchanges of artwork — from early elementary students to adult artists — have engaged individual creators as well as museums and galleries.

The relationship between Maine and Aomori began with the shipwreck of the barque Chesebrough on October 30, 1889, off the coast of what was then Shariki Village. Nearly a century later, in 1980, a swimming competition was established to rekindle and celebrate the bond between Bath, Maine, and Tsugaru City, Aomori, Japan. In 2005, the Mayors of Tsugaru and Bath jointly recommended the establishment of a state-to-state relationship.
