In his exhibition at Ocean House Gallery, Frank Gregory brings together a diverse group of works spanning monotype, plein air painting, and still life. At first glance, the collection may seem eclectic—even, as Gregory puts it, like a group show. But beneath the variety is a consistent and deeply personal way of seeing: a restless eye, a resistance to repetition, and an enduring fascination with observation, atmosphere, paper, light, shadow, and color.

Gregory’s process changes radically with the medium. Monotype is immediate, physical, and open-ended, allowing him to make quick changes directly on the plexiglas plate before committing an image to paper. Plein air painting is an exercise in bringing order to the visual chaos of the world outside, while still life offers its opposite: carefully controlled light, deliberate arrangements, and slow decisions. For Gregory, the medium is often the beginning of the work, shaping not only how an image is made but how it is seen.

His approach to making art is similarly direct. “Jump right in, like a cold ocean swim,” he says. When uncertainty or creative blocks arise, he simply moves to another piece. Working on several paintings at once allows ideas to develop at different speeds and keeps the process active and responsive.

The result is an exhibition about looking—and about the continual need to look again. Across different subjects, surfaces, and approaches, Gregory remains engaged in the same essential pursuit: slowing down long enough to see what is actually there, while remaining open to whatever unexpected direction the next work might take.
