Join esteemed author/illustrators Eric Rohmann and Candace Fleming as they present their individual creative practice as well as their process of working together on beloved picture books.

Eric Rohmann has illustrated beloved picture books and young adult novels including The Golden Compass series by Philip Pullman, Bless This Mouse by Lois Lowry, as well as many titles written by his wife, Candace Fleming. My Friend Rabbit and Time Flies written and illustrated by Eric have won Caldecott awards and are New York Times Bestselling Books.

Romann says: I make books I want to see that haven't been made yet. I make books for kids because they are the best audience: children are curious, enthusiastic, impulsive, generous and pleased by simple joys. They laugh easily at the ridiculous and are willing believe the absurd. Children are not ironic, disillusioned or indifferent, but hopeful, open-minded and openhearted, with a voracious hunger for pictures.

Also an esteemed children’s book author, Candace welcomes teaching opportunities with school groups and adult audiences at professional conferences, festivals and other popular literary events. Specializing in creating engaging non-fiction, she and her husband, Eric Rohmann frequently collaborate, most notably on the recent award winning The Giant Squid and The Honeybee.

Eric and Candace will present about their individual creative process as well as their process of working together.

Thursday, July 17 at 7:00 PM (doors 6:30 PM), approximately 60 minutes.

Free to the public, registration is required.



ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATION INSTITUTE

Illustration Institute's mission is to raise appreciation and awareness of illustration in its many forms. ii seeks to provide people of all ages the opportunity to learn directly from master artists and working professionals through exhibitions and workshops provided at public libraries, museums, schools, and other community venues.

Illustration Institute gives community members the rare opportunity to learn how these artists have developed their careers and craft. They bring their unique perspective and behind-the-scenes view into what the creative process and their careers require. This rich insight aims to inspire, to instruct and to enrich students of all ages and abilities.

Illustrators bring stories to life in a tangible way. Our programming provides the opportunity to create deep and personal connections to art and literacy.



PARKING & TRANSPORTATION

The Greater Portland Metro’s Congress & Casco Street Stop is directly in front of our building, served by routes 1, 7, 8, and 9B.

Parking is available at the Arts District Garage, which has entrances on Casco and Brown Street, with a rate of $5 per hour. Metered street parking is available on Congress, Casco, Cumberland, Free Street, and other nearby streets. Free hourly street parking is available between Parris and Alder Street.

To enter our building, patrons will need to navigate a single step. There is a wheelchair-accessible elevator and a ramp available upon request.
