Last summer I spent two weeks as an artist-in-residence at an abandoned and fairly remote village in Crete. I spent the past winter in the studio, processing the experience of having lived there, in a monumental landscape surrounded by enormous mountains, crumbling buildings and objects left behind by the previous inhabitants. Interestingly, various elements of the village and village life took on more importance after I returned home and others that seemed important at the time, became less so. The resulting paintings took on a narrative quality that although abstract, created a story within the paintings and among them. The vibrancy and energy of the paintings are reflective of the experience.
