juggling motherhood and photography.....
Job Photographer / mostly in the third floor office (and now studio, as i kicked the kids out of their playroom and painted it white!).
Lives In The West End
I studied photography at Princeton University in the late 80's and have been working as a photographer ever since (in Boston, NYC, and now, Portland, ME). Three children are now in the mix, so living a bit of a juggling act, but picture taking is a must and makes me very happy.
Why did you choose Portland? A little over ten years ago my husband had a job interview here. We drove up from NYC with our 9 month old son nestled in the back of the car. The next morning my husband went into his interview at the hospital, and my son and I wandered around the West End. We all had dinner that night at Flatbread Pizza, and we were sold. Thankfully, my husband got the job!
Who are Portlanders you admire and why? This list could get very long and I already see many of the names that I would mention, already mentioned by others. Hopefully this is a new one.... Masey Kaplan (!!!) of CloseBuy Catalog, not only for her wonderful, cheerful spirit, but for her brilliant idea to support local artists and craftsmen and her endless efforts to bring that to fruition.
What do you like to do with out-of-towners? Eat. Usually these out-of-towners have kids in tow, so often the food of choice is pizza.... the options are endless and always successful. Bonobo to Otto"s to Fatbread to Miccucci's.....
Where's your "happy place" on the peninsula? My house, my office, where i get to work on pictures.
What's the most surprising thing about this city? Often my world feels a little small and dictated by my kid's schedules, school, sports, etc. (and the fact that my "happy place" is a small room on the third floor of our house). But then I'll be struck by how big Portland actually is and how much is going on here. This happens all the time and usually it is something relating to the Arts that grabs me. The other night I walked into SPACE Gallery for meeting and the current Michael Kolster photography show blew me away!
What's your favorite indulgence and where do you find it? There are lots! I dream of Miyake sushi and the best secret is that you can grab a box of it at Rosemont or the West End Market for the most delicious lunch ever. Then there are Holy Donuts too....
What's the most under-appreciated place or thing in town? Oh gosh, I don't know... the Portland Y may not be on some folk's radars, but I love it! A real slice of Portland. I've made lifelong friends from swimming laps at the Y pool. An amazing resource for Portland.
Describe your perfect night—and the following morning—in Portland. Dinner at Fore Street or Boda or Local 188 with just my husband, or with friends, then a good night's sleep without any kids crawling (at all, at any point during the night) into my bed, then coffee delivered to me in bed by a happy kid who only smiles for a while....then maybe some picture taking.
Do you have a serendipity spot? Where do you always bump into good people? Hate to say this, but my serendipity spot is probably Whole Foods....
