Lives In Portland

I was born outside of Seoul, South Korea and grew up in the Argentine neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas, with time spent in Baltimore and Oakland before moving to Maine.

I live in Portland’s Deering Center neighborhood with my wife, artist Carrie Scanga, and our incredible three year old daughter.

Why did you choose Portland? In the late 90s I had moved to the Bay Area from Baltimore, but missed the east coast. Kate Adams (adjunct at Bates) and Nathan Halverson recommended Portland as a great town for art/music/food, which it is. Also, I like long walks on the beach.

Who are Portlanders you admire and why? The person(s) who puts the hearts up on Valentine's Day. That's a big job but it sure makes everyone happy. Jon Courtney because he's a tireless instigator. Someone give him a bunch of money so he can open a proper independent movie theater.

What do you like to do with out-of-towners? Kettle Cove, Ferry Beach, Morse Mountain, Popham, etc. A walk at Gilsland Farm, Bradbury Mountain, Harpswell Cliff Walk, etc. Two Lights Lobster Shack, not awesome food but everyone loves taking pictures there. Blue Spoon, Local 188, Red's in Wiscasset, etc.

What's the most under-appreciated place or thing in town? Getting stuck on the Casco Bay Bridge can be nice. Like a little club, everyone out of their cars and watching the boat pass underneath.
