I write, I sing and I perform.

Job Journalist/Musician/Performance Artist / Dispatch Magazine/Styxx Nightclub

Lives In The West End

I've been writing with Dispatch Magazine for a year, covering everything from LGBT studies to music and nightlife. I currently am the on-site staff writer. I have a desk. It's got a neat computer that I am still learning to use.

Outside of the office, I'm a gigging musician, focusing primarily on the writing and performing of different harmony parts with a small group of vocalists. People contract me to write harmonies for session work or live performance, and teach it to my group.

Finally, I have created a character named Cherry Lemonade. I'm a male performing as a charicature of a female. Hosting events is my forte, as well as singing live in-character. I design all of my own looks, from hair and clothing to makeup.

Why did you choose Portland? It made sense for me to hone my skills as a performer on my home turf. I have a level of comfort in this city that encouraged growth without judgement or fear of failure. One thing doesn't work? Go in a different direction. It's a great place to build a repertoire and be proud of it before taking it to foreign territories and trying to sell yourself as a product.

Who are Portlanders you admire and why? Anybody who's got the cajones to get on stage and display themselves objectively for the public. Being an artist isn't an easy thing, because you hate everything you do until you put it in front of somebody else, and then expect them to hate it.

What do you like to do with out-of-towners? Food and drinks are a must. I always take them to Novare Res for craft beers, and Otto for pizza. Two totally unique experiences within six blocks of each other. In the warmer seasons, I enjoy bringing guests out to Peaks Island for the day.

Where's your "happy place" on the peninsula? The Dispatch Magazine office is such a positive environment to create different writing pieces that I can get behind. We basically get to hang out together and share Portland (and the surrounding areas) with the public, from our point of view. The Big Easy always has top-notch music and great energy.

What's the most surprising thing about this city? How different the rest of the state is, compared to the peninsula! I never have to leave the Downtown/West End districts, so I always forget that there is actual nature surrounding Portland. That, and how little emphasis there is on plowing the streets and sidewalks in the Portland area during inclimate weather! It's like they just forget!

What's your favorite indulgence and where do you find it? A well-made specialty cocktail from Local 188.

What's the most under-appreciated place or thing in town? The tree/building decorations around the holidays. I have a weird thing with the orbs sticking out of the buildings on Commercial St.

Describe your perfect night—and the following morning—in Portland. Dinner at Pom's Thai Taste on Congress, then Novare Res for some foreign beer. The next morning, I'm gonna want a drink and a breakfast sandwich from Ruskis.

Do you have a serendipity spot? Where do you always bump into good people? Styxx has been a second home ever since I came out many years ago. It's a place I can go to decompress and let the stress of the day disappear.
