I love using arts in general and theatre in particular to evoke change. A young woman said to me many years ago, in response to a workshop presentation of a new play, "So what? We know our friends are dealing with these issues. What we don't know is what to do about it." The next draft took on that challenge, and that has been the goal/ideal of all of Add Verb's work since.
I like to think through what's going to help an audience hear, engage, ignite. I want to understand what is going to shut them down, get in the way, or be counter productive. I like to ask what are the tools and ideas and connections that can be left behind--how can the work make the individual as well as the community stronger?
Can the work entertain as well as inspire? Am I standing in front of it, or within/beside it?
What privilege is being assumed, and what responsibility comes with that?
Often I'm using the work to subvert and shift a social norm: Using humor that doesn't come at someone else's expense. Using live performance to cut through the screen noise. Honoring the wisdom and experience in the room.
I love puppets, video, photos, repurposed goods, synchronicity, and simplicity.
I like creating images, telling stories, eating desserts, and helping people along the way. I also like boats.
