Lives In The West End

I am a 20-something who was born and raised in Portland/Falmouth. I attended college in Newport, R.I., traveled extensively through Europe and even spent time living and volunteering at a children's home in Kenya. While I love all of these places and hold a special place in my heart for them, I always found myself coming home and breathing a sigh of relief crossing over the bridge from New Hampshire to Kittery.

For me, Portland has everything that I love: great restaurants, unique boutique shopping, great support of local and international causes and so much more. I feel like I've created a map for myself all over the city; I live in the West End, coach at a local high school, run Back Cove weekly, shop for produce at Rosemont on the East End, babysit in Deering Center. I know Portland like the back of my hand; want to know the fastest way to get from Morrill's Corner to Spring Street? I'm your girl. I consider myself a walking billboard for the city that I have grown up in  and love. I live, work and love Portland - and I'm proud to call it home.

Why did you choose Portland? Being born in Portland to an extremely large extended family (if you're already here, we're probably related), I'm kind of tied here. That being said, it's not hard to want to stay. I've done the whole college out of state, travel across Europe and Africa thing, and although I have left my heart in so many places my core is rooted here in Portland. Great shopping, amazing restaurants, vibrant local arts and culture scene, four different seasons (okay - maybe three), plus the majority of people I love? It's a no-brainer.

What do you like to do with out-of-towners? Rosemont picnic lunch on the Eastern Prom, Old Port shopping, Willard Beach walking, beers at Bull Feeney's, Casco Bay island hopping

Where's your "happy place" on the peninsula? A breezy and sunny reading spot on the Western Prom. Give me a good book and I'll never leave.

What's the most surprising thing about this city? That's it not the state capital! (Augusta?! Really?)

What's your favorite indulgence and where do you find it? A toss up between designer denim at Bliss on Exchange Street or brunch at Caiola's on Pine St.

What's the most under-appreciated place or thing in town? Evergreen Cemetery on Stevens Avenue. Beautiful, tranquil and peaceful (as every cemetery should be).
